Leave it to some newly minted young local architects to think outside the box. Leave it to some newly minted young local architects to think outside the box. In their final thesis projects, this year's crop of 70 graduate and undergraduate students at downtown's NewSchool of Architecture and Design turned a passion for housing, infrastructure and other aspects of the built environment into research papers, models, drawings and, in some cases, videos.

Matthew Ellis, 36, principal and founder of Bluemotif Architecture, recently received the local American Institute of Architects chapter's Young Architect of the Year Award. He earned bachelor's degrees in architecture and environmental design from Ball State University and moved to San Diego in 1997.
