Proposition 2004

The ballots have been cast, our critics' votes are tallied – tops in Arts (write-ins sans bubbles not allowed)

December 26, 2004

This was the year that was – 2004, when America went to the polls, the Olympic torch went to Athens and all the Oscars seemingly went to "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." It was a year for "wardrobe malfunctions" and lip-syncing scandals, for Mel's take on the crucifixion and Michael Moore's take on Dubya, for "Jersey Boys" and the Boston Red Sox, for the end of "Sex and the City" and the dawn of "Desperate Housewives."

In the world of entertainment, 2004 was most of all about the individuals – in San Diego as well as nationally and abroad – who made significant artistic or cultural contributions. They provoked, inspired and in some cases effected change that may be felt for years to come.

Today in Arts, we mark 2004 with our People of the Year – for better, or worse – in movies, music, art, books, theater, dance and broadcasting.

Also inside, for list-lovers, Union-Tribune critics line up their most memorable shows, top stories and best-of's.
