City Attorney Michael Aguirre will issue an advisory opinion sometime this week on whether 5,547 write-in ballots for Councilwoman Donna Frye should be counted in the contentious San Diego mayor's race.

The city of San Diego's recycling program for Christmas trees will begin Wednesday with the opening of 18 drop-off locations. EDCO Disposal Corp. is offering Christmas tree recycling to its customers throughout the county.

The Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade begins at 10 a.m. Thursday on North Harbor Drive in downtown San Diego. The Starbucks Coffee Family Festival will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Broadway Pier.

The 27th annual Holiday Bowl football game will match the University of California Golden Bears against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Qualcomm Stadium.
