Avocado Commission
to hold two meetings
PALA –
The California Avocado Commission will hold its annual meetings next month in Oxnard and Pala.
Growers and industry leaders will talk about the U.S. Department of Agriculture's recent decision to expand the Mexican avocado import program and the effort to increase the demand for California-grown avocados across the country.
Under new regulations effective Jan. 31, Mexican Hass avocados will be allowed into 47 states year-round, and into California, Florida and Hawaii in two years.
The increase in imports means competition for California growers, which produce 95 percent of the nation's crop. Growers also worry that stem and seed weevils and seed moths that have been found in Mexican fruit could threaten their farms.
The meetings are planned for 9 to 11 a.m. The first is Jan. 25 at the Residence Inn by Marriott, 2101 W. Vineyard Ave. in Oxnard. The second is set for Jan. 27 at the Pala Casino Resort and Spa, 11154 state Route 76 in Pala.
For information, contact Michelle Spelman at the commission, (949) 341-1955, or e-mail avosource@avocado.org.
